Food Flavored Video: Barf Day by Diet Cig

Ever wondered what a birthday party featuring members of Diet Cig, Daddy Issues, Pardoner and Plush would include? Well wonder no more. Diet Cig gives you a little taste, excuse me, a giant vomit dripping taste in their video for "Barf Day."

The birthday starts dull enough. There is some burgers being flipped by a grill master who definitely has better places to be. Then the crew joins each other in a kum ba yah half circle around a juggling clown (who also acts like he has better places to be. Come on man, look alive. Do you know who you are performing for? That's Diet Cig, dude. That person there? Daddy Issues. Yep, Pardoner and Plush as well). The clown is so dull that one of the party goers, I believe it is Alex from Diet Cig, resorts to digging in dirt.

At this point, the ballon circled cake comes out and everyone pledges allegiance sends happy thoughts to the birthday girl. Here's where things go a bit awry. Instead of slicing the cake and sharing it, Alex smashes it on the table and runs from the party singing "I just want to have ice cream on my birthday." As she leaves the party, of course, she finds an abandoned ice cream truck (ok, there is a driver in front but seriously, he doesn't put up much of a fight at all). She climbs in through the window and starts doling out cold sweet treats to the party goers who have followed her. Then, Diet Cig steals the truck and proceeds to turn it into a moving concert vehicle. This signifies the end of an absolutely perfect "Barf Day."

See it all yourself:

Just the sounds:

Food Flavored Song: Cherry Picking by Potty Mouth

Aw, the 90's. What a glorious time I had. There was some punk rock, government conspiracies, soccer. *Thumbs quickly through a journal covered with Spuddy Buddy stickers* I see there were also lots of car accidents, paint jobs, farmhouse coal mines and dishwashing. Wait, why did I like the 90's again? Oh yeah, because of the cherry picking. In my 90's world cherry picking had three distinct meanings. First, it was what happened when you saw a tree full of pitted fruit calling your name and responded like any sensible person would. Stuffed your mouth full. Depending on your location, you may have been met by a rifle toting farmer trying to protect his crop. Fear not, a quick quip about Reagan being a fascist followed by a stop, drop and roll down the embankment behind you usually worked. Second, cherry picking was what happened to people that were either too lazy or didn't like playing defense in a sport that doesn't have offsides (i.e. basketball). They'd wait on the offensive side for the other team to either score or lose the ball to their team. I never did that and I hated the people who did. I always threw the ball to them just a little too high so it would go off their hands and out of bounds. Then I slapped them on the ass and told them to learn to catch. My coach's always agreed with me. The final meaning of cherry picking was the person who confirms a position based on a small sample of evidence, totally forgetting about all the other evidence that points in the opposite direction. I used to pull that on my friend's mom all the time. Thing is, she didn't have the internet to prove me wrong (it was a 90's thing). If I were the type of person who nicknamed all the decades of my lifetime after fruits (and I'm not), the 90's are clearly the cherry picking years (okay, yes I have named the decades after fruit).

So why this 90's cherry picking nostalgia? Because I've just finished listening to "Cherry Picking" by Potty Mouth. The song, mainly the vocal harmonies present in the chorus, feels a lot like some of the finer moments of 90's alternative (think Veruca Salt, Nirvana). In cherry form, this is the pit. As far as the fruit that surrounds it, the intense, almost violent bass that reverberate throughout, the ear shattering drums and the sprinkling in of telephone style spoken words have pop-punk and feminist punk written all over it. Probably not surprising considering the EP that "Cherry Picking" comes from was produced by John Goodmanson who has worked with Sleater-Kinney and Bikini Kill amongst others. Why go to him unless he offered something they liked? The track, according to The Fader, actually was inspired by lead singer Abby Weems' viewing Chelsea Peretti's Netflix special over and over again. At the root of the track is the idea that people feel Potty Mouth should fit into a riot grrl revival box but it just doesn't work for them.

In support of the EP, which is self-titled, the band will hit the road for a small run of East Coast headline shows in September. You can see the full listing of dates at the bottom of this post.

If you get a chance to check out the EP, which comes out on August 21st via Potty Mouth's Planet Whatever Records, pay special attention to track number four, "Long Haul." It's also a pretty fun song  (the verses and music remind me a lot of Weezer, the chorus....not so much).

9/22                 Philadelphia, PA @ Boot & Saddle

Listen: Pop Crystals from Hey Anna, Day Wave and Baby Baby

Guacamole wontons you say? Quick quiz, what should I listen to while I make them? Here's my answer:

I'm walking down the street all graceful like when I suddenly notice my right heel is sticking just a bit. I turn my gaze towards the right shoe and notice a big ol' piece of sticky bubblegum. Damn. I scrap it off with a nearby stick and continue on my way. I tell you this story because I think that pretty much sums up Hey Anna's new single "Don't Talk Stop". They call themselves indie poppers but the new track is way too sludgy for that title. It has qualities of indie pop for sure but there is also an element of experimentalism, a shoegaze drawl and even some psychedelia. "Don't Talk Stop" comes from the band's upcoming album Run Koko, which is due out this summer. You can catch the track live this Saturday at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn (1PM) or at the Asbury Park Yacht Club (7PM).

Wait, did I hear someone mention indie pop? *Ruffles around in messenger bag, pulls out a cassette, puts it into a nearby walkman, hands headphones over* You need to check out this new Day Wave track "We Try But We Don't Fit In". Day Wave, aka Jackson Phillips, has been rolling out dreamy indie-pop for about as long as I've been growing sourdough in my refrigerator (that would be a few months). The world has been hounding him to get these fine stand alone tracks packaged into a neat little EP that we can have, hold and fall asleep beside in the evening. Well Day Wave will finally deliver. July 17th is the big day. That's when his EP, entitled Headcase, will be available to the world. The EP will feature his previously released tracks ("Nothing At All", "Total Zombie" and "Drag"). It will also feature his brand new one that hit the internet today, "We Try But We Don't Fit In". In case that isn't enough (damn you are hard to impress) the EP will also feature two previously unheard tracks. At this point let me point out all the amazing things that Day Wave has accomplished in just three songs. He has been played on KCRW, KEXP and WXPN. He has made it onto Sirius XMU's and Alt Nation's playlist (and he charted on both). He soundtracked an Urban Outfitters video. He has also broken soundcloud a couple times because of his over one million streams. Those are some pretty impressive feats. But don't worry about catching up on all that, you can get on "We Try But We Don't Fit In" right at the ground floor. Hear it before the rest of the world does:

Baby Baby premiered two new songs last week courtesy of Red Bull Sound Select. One takes place on the dance floor, showing again that Baby Baby is comfortable being a punk band that doesn't mind hitting the club circuit, the other details the quarter life crisis that most eighteen to twenty-five year olds go through when they realize their life is 1/4 of the way over. Don't worry my friend, I'm here to tell you that the next quarter of your life goes much faster. I went to sleep last night and I was twenty-five. I woke up today at fifty. I had to physically force myself not to start yelling at someone to "turn off that racket." Baby Baby used to say they love me (now they just say they blow). Hopefully they can still love the fifty year old version of me.

Catch Baby Baby on Warped Tour this summer.
